The Central Motor Vehicles (Third Amendment) Rules, 2021
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on 2nd March 2021 has published the Central Motor Vehicles (Third Amendment) Rules, 2021 which has made it mandatory for automakers to offer airbags for front passengers on new vehicle models manufactured from 1st April 2021. The Amendment brings in new sub-rule 125(9A) which has directed the manufacturer of every motor vehicle to fit with airbag for the person occupying the front seat, other than the driver and the requirement for such airbag shall be as per AIS 145, as amended from time to time, till the corresponding Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) specifications are notified under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. Therefore all vehicles manufactured on and after the 1st of April, 2021, in the case of new models, and 31st day of August, 2021, in the case of existing models, to be fitted with airbag.
