Report on the CETP of Tarapur Industrial Area, Maharashtra, 27/07/2020
Report of the second joint inspection-cum monitoring of common effluent treatment plant (CETP), Tarapur Industrial Area, Maharashtra in the matter of Original Application No. 64/2016 (Akhil Bhartiya Mangela Samaj & Others Vs Maharashtra Pollution Control Board & Others) in compliance of NGT order dated September 26, 2019 with October 22, 2019.
The NGT had directed that the CPCB should undertake jointly with MPCB extensive surveillance and monitoring of the CEPT at regular intervals of three months and submit its report.
The report mentioned that the analysis results of various effluent samples of CETP collected during the joint inspection-cum-monitoring on March 12, 2020 reveal that no improvement has been made by the CETP operator to upgraded or improve performance of the CETP since the pervious joint inspection conducted on November 13, 2019 except that of on-going desludging activities in Sump no. 2.
Some of the violations listed in the report are the following:
(a) There was continued non-compliance of CETP inlet effluent quality with the design norms and prescribed limits.
(b) Continued non-compliance of CETP outlet effluent quality with the prescribed limits
(c) Continued exceedance of hydraulic load of CETP to the lesign/prescribed limit and illegal discharges
(d) Poor CETP sludge management and inconsistency in CETP sludge generation
(e) Continued improper operation of all major treatment units of CETP and sludge depositions
(f) Continued improper CETP inlet and outlet flow meter measurement and non-operational online continuous monitoring system.
