Order of the National Green Tribunal regarding threat to mangroves along Chapora river, Bardez, Goa, 23/07/2019
Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Sagardeep Sirsaikar Vs Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority & Others dated 23/07/2019. Sagardeep Sirsaikar has filed the appeal seeking for an order protection of mangroves of Chapora river along its stretch, more specifically Camurlim village which is stated to contain the highest density of mangroves along with Tuem village which is being threatened due to land filling of creeks and illegal constructions at Camurlim Village, Bardez, Goa. It is stated that the area where the construction is being undertaken falls under the No Development Zone (NDZ) as per Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) Notification, 2011, and consist mostly of mangroves and that the area is classified as CRZ-I as per the Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) of Goa 1996.
NGT directs Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA), to inspect the area in question and submit a detailed report after verifying the facts and circumstances set out in the application.
