Best practices on renewable energy in Africa
Electricity and energy are key African issues: with 2/3 of its population still without access to electricity services and electricity demand assumed to triple until 2030, African nations’ energy policies are essential to achieve their development goals. Increased use of renewable energy can make this transition possible. Its untapped potential on the continent is considerable and can increase investment as well as broaden electricity access. Renewable energy can also allow African countries to become climate leaders through a participatory and people-centred approach. This paper, prepared by Germanwatch together with ACSEA, Brot für die Welt and Power Shift Africa informs about the current status, challenges, and opportunities of renewable energy in Africa and discusses best practice examples and next steps needed to be taken.
