Report of expert committee constituted to assess the carrying capacity of ecologically sensitive areas (ESAs) in the Western Ghats region of Karnataka
Increasing developmental pressures and rising insensitivity towards nature protection have resulted in intervention of Hon’ble Supreme Court of India and the National Green Tribunal towards protection and restoration of the ecology of the Western Ghats. Such developments include initiatives by the Government of India i.e., Ecologically Sensitive Areas followed by Pronab Sen Committee Report (2000), Prof. Madhav Gadgil Committee (2011) i.e, Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel ( WGEEP) and High Level Working Group ( 2013) . Further the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India in it directives to National Green Tribunal (NGT) directed Secretary, Ministry of Environment Forests and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) to constitute a team majorly forming part of the State Government and the Ministry itself to conduct a comprehensive study to assess the carrying capacity of the Westerns Ghats region in the State of Karnataka, to sustain the projects as proposed.
