Directions under Section 16(5) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 regarding operationalisation of amendment regulations regarding revised standards for milk and milk products and certain restriction on sale of cream

The country will get new national standards after 60 years that will standardise outdated benchmarks for determining adulteration. According to these revised standards introduced by top food regulator - Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) - fat content now ranges between 1.5% and 6%, down from a minimum of 3% before. The standards were revised because of the change in environmental conditions, quality of fodder, water that cattle consume.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, hereby makes the following regulations operational from 2nd August, 2017. The food business operators shall follow the regulations related to revised standards for milk and milk products and certain restriction for sale of cream as specified in this document. The enforcement of these regulations shall commence only after the final regulations are notified in the Gazette of India.
