Bound to be safe

India has ratified the International Atomic Energy Agency's (iaea's) Convention on Nuclear Safety (cns), which legally obligates it to adhere to certain safety principles in constructing, operating and regulating land-based civilian nuclear power plants. This was recently announced by the Union ministry of external affairs. cns was adopted in 1994 and enforced in 1996.

"India shares the objective of the convention of maintaining a high level of nuclear safety worldwide through the enhancement of national measures and international cooperation, including in safety-related technical cooperation,' the ministry statement stressed.
