The Union government announced India's broadband policy on October 14, 2004, to increase the penetration of broadband Internet services. The policy projects the subscriber base to increase from 3 million in 2005 to 20 million by 2010. This growth is expected to take place through the adoption of various technologies, like wireless networks. Though the policy suggests relaxing rules regarding the use of radio waves to broadcast internet traffic, the policy sees the future of broadband in high-speed optical fibre cable networks.
