Canada refuses Sumas:The federal court of Canada ruled out the possibility of establishing a US-based power plant near the Canadian border. The company, Sumas Energy 2, proposed to source natural gas from Canada and build the plant in Sumas. It would cost US $400 million and generate 660 megawatts of power. The proposal ran into opposition in the province's Fraser Valley, where communities contended that air quality was already bad because of pollution drifting from the Vancouver area. The National Energy Board rejected the proposed plant last spring.
Vioxx verdict: The New Jersey court recently gave a verdict in favour of the Merck & Co Inc. A case was filed by a 60-year old man claiming that the anti arthritic medicine Vioxx, of Merck, caused his heart attack. The court dismissed the case saying the man had been using the drug intermittently and had other health problems, which could have led to the heart attack. The verdict might protect Merck from a majority of the 6,500 lawsuits pending against Vioxx. These cases were filed after Merck voluntarily withdrew Vioxx from the market last year, as a study showed long-term use of this medicine could cause a heart attack.
