Changing course
The Parbati hydroelectric project is being developed in three stages. The first scheme is under planning. Stage II, harnessing water from the lower reaches of the Parbati, comprises an 85 m-high dam and a 31.5 km-long waterway tunnel. It will generate 800 mw of power. The Manihar, Pancha and Hurla streams will also be diverted to the headrace tunnel. In all, 56 km of tunnelling work will be done. The power house will be on the bank of the Sainj at Suind in Sainj valley. Stage-III in Sainj valley aims at generating 520 mw. It will utilize the water released by the Stage-II power house as well as inflows from the Sainj through an 8.1 km-long tunnel.
