According to the Union ministry of social justice and empowerment, the number of families affected in Madhya Pradesh (MP) alone, when the dam height was 110.64 m, was 8,860 in 104 villages. This number did not include families affected by temporary submergence.
After the Supreme Court judgment of 2005, MP was asked not to differentiate between those affected by temporary and permanent submergence. And the dam height was also increased to 121.92 m, causing additional submergence. Affected families swelled to 24,421 in 177 villages. As many as 73 villages were added for a rise of 11 m. According to the Narmada Valley Development Authority, of the 24,421 families, 5,456 have been resettled in Gujarat; 3,879 have received the Special Rehabilitation Package (SRP): 1,037 have already purchased land in MP or Gujarat.
Assuming all families have been rehabilitated as claimed by MP, we are left with 15,086 families that must have received land for land.
