Maldives State of Environment Report: The Monthly Overview, April 2014

Thoriq Ibrahim, Maldives Minister of Environment and Energy hailed the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) entitled ‘Climate Change 2014: Mitigation of Climate Change’ and stated that this report confirmed that with rapid actions, technological means and behavioral changes it is still possible to avert the impending catastrophe. ENVIRONMENT

“Averting catastrophe is still possible” said Thoriq Ibrahim, Maldives Minister of Environment and Energy when he hailed the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) entitled ‘Climate Change 2014: Mitigation of Climate Change’. Mr. Ibrahim stated that the Report confirmed that with rapid actions, technological means and behavioral changes it is still possible to avert the impending catastrophe. For 27 years, the Republic of Maldives has been passionately advocating on the ever growing impacts of climate change, particularly to low lying island states.

LAND, AGRICULTURE, GRAZING LANDS AND ANIMAL CARE

The Government of the Republic of Maldives and the Government of China, with a view to further developing friendly and cooperative relations signed the “Agreement on Agricultural Research Project Cooperation” at the ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Under the terms of the Agreement the Government of China shall extend to the Government of Maldives, a grant aid of One Million Yuan (RMB 1, 000,00.00).

WATER RESOURCES AND FISHERIES

Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited. (Mifco) has revealed interest in commencing long line fishery with Maldivians. Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr. Mohamed Shainee has said that 90 percent of the fishermen in Maldives will be able to participate in “MVR 10000 regardless of catch” scheme.

HABITAT

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that the Prime Minister of Japan assured him the assistance of the Japanese government in the development projects of Maldives. Tourist arrivals to the Maldives saw an increase of 9.7 percent during the first three months of the year compared with the same period of 2013, reaching a total of 321,561, the tourism ministry of Maldives said.

WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION

At a function held at the Maldives Ministry of Environment and Energy, the Ministry signed contracts with Malaaz Maldives Private Limited to establish Waste Management Centres in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll Dhigurah and Dhangethi islands. These centres will be constructed under the Ari Atoll Solid Waste Management Project to reduce waste, negative health impacts and damage to the environment.
