aasu's ultimatum: Apparently agitated over former Union minister Suresh Prabhu's plans to drain out excess water from the state, the All Assam Students' Union (aasu) has said that it would never compromise on the issue of networking of rivers (see: 'Churning issue', November 30, 2002). Prabhu is the chairperson of the Task Force on Inter-linking of Rivers.

aasu is threatening to launch a mass movement to oppose the Union government's move. According to its president, Prabin Boro, a delegation would visit New Delhi next month to put pressure on the government to withdraw the plan. In this regard talks may be held with officials of the Union water resources ministry and the Union home ministry, revealed Boro.

encroachment details: A division bench of the Kerala High Court has granted four weeks' time to the state government to furnish the list of people who were found to have encroached on forestland after January 1, 1977, and were evicted thereupon. The list will also contain names of those who had been evicted in the past one year (see: 'Stabbed in the back', March 15, 2003). A bench comprising Chief Justice J L Gupta and Justice A K Basheer issued the directions in a public interest litigation petition filed by Nature Lovers Movement, Thiruvankulam. The group was seeking eviction of encroachers on forestland prior to January 1, 1977.
