Indonesia takes steps to soak CO2 emissions of the climate change meet
The un climate change conference, which began on December 3 in Bali, Indonesia, is conducting several discussions, including the adaptation fund, reducing emissions from deforestation and technology transfer under the clean development mechanism. A development that also fuelled much discussion on the sidelines was Australia's decision to ratify the Kyoto Protocol on December 3. This leaves the USas the only industrialized country not to ratify the protocol.
Just a day before the delegates from 190 countries congregated in Bali, the host nation planted around 80 million trees across the archipelago. "The government of Indonesia is dedicating the carbon stock of the trees to offset the emissions produced by the UN meeting,' said environment minister Rachmat Witoelar. According to the government estimates, fossil fuel burned by delegates during their stay in Bali and flying to and from the island would produce about 50,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases. Witoelar said the step would eventually soak up 900,000 tonnes of CO2
