Wetlands and people

The IWMI has launched a report, titled ‘Wetlands and People.' The report emphasizes both the important role wetlands play in local communities livelihoods and the intensification of threats to wetlands. The report addresses a variety of issues including wetlands and society, threats to wetlands, wetland agriculture, the agricultural potential of wetlands, people-centered wetland management, limits to wetland use, trade-offs, the political economy of wetlands, and local involvement in wetland management. It includes case studies from the Niger and Nile Rivers, and from the Lakes Chilwa and Kolleru, as well as from Cambodia, Zambia and Brazil. The report calls for people-centered planning processes that combines the conservation agenda with sustainable livelihoods.
