Water wealth: a briefing paper on the state of groundwater management in Bangladesh
Urban Bangladesh faces a huge water crisis. Groundwater tables are falling rapidly, centuries-old urban water bodies have disappeared or severely polluted and urban floods are a regular occurrence in the rainy season in many cities. In addition to water scarcity, water quality of major rivers and canals is under threat. Groundwater pollution is also a threat to the society. The main cause of water shortage in urban Bangladesh is because the urban water paradigm grossly interferes with the natural hydrological principles.
