Urbanization, biodiversity and ecosystem services: challenges and opportunities - a global assessment
This new Springer publication describes and analyses multiple dimensions of urbanization, focusing on how the processes affect patterns of biodiversity and ecosystem services within as well as outside city boundaries. It is therefore an assessment of the process of urbanization, rather than an assessment of cities per se . Further, it focuses on the biosphere and analyses how the living environment is impacted in a rapidly urbanizing world, and explores connections to human well-being and how an increasing urban population may succeed or fail to develop mechanisms for reconnecting with the biosphere. Thus, this book is not an assessment of all the challenges connected with urban growth, such as e.g., challenges linked to management of waste, energy and transportation.
