Perfect sense

wastelands in 14 districts of Andhra Pradesh were recently mapped by the state's remote sensing applications centre (apsrac) under the aegis of the National Wasteland Development Board. The information obtained would be used for wasteland reclamation, said apsrac director, R S Rao. The director informed that the centre was preparing maps showing potential areas for shrimp farming and areas in need of conservation in nine coastal districts.

Rao said that the apsrac's areas of operation would include coastal regions often ravaged by cyclones and floods and the drought-struck Rayalseema and Telegana regions. The maps would help in the effective management of rainwater harvest structures, treating watersheds, special flood warning, identifying safer zones for rescue operations, reopening old and choked river courses, identifying mines and determining the state's vegetation cover.
