Dead right

after a long period of reluctance and fear, cadaveric organ transplant is gradually finding acceptance. Topping the list is kidney transplants in Chennai, for which the city had earlier earned notoriety. Renal transplants are also fairly common here. Chennai doctors say that now it is easier to seek the consent of the brain-dead victim's relatives for harvesting transplantable organs and often, the victim's relatives volunteer to donate organs. It is fast becoming a reality for Chennai that while organ harvesting is being done in the hospital, the patient flies in from another city.

Recently, in an interesting development, Delhi's Apollo Hospitals harvested a kidney from a brain-dead victim and couriered it to Chennai for transplant. This indicates how the countrywide network in cadaver organ surgery is getting strengthened.
