Survival kit

HUNDREDS of foundries at Howrah, West Bengal, facing closure may hope to survive after all. The Supreme Court had recently ordered the closure of these units for pot implementing pollution control measures. A technology developed by the city-based Eastern Gases Ltd (EGL) now enables these foundries to use liquified petroleum gas (LPG) as an alternative for coal. According to the EGL chairperson, S K Bhansali, the technology will help open closed foundries and it will also help reduce production costs by 30 to 40 per cent. The manufacturing process of the foundries will improve as the temperature in a gas-fired furnace can be better controlled compared to a coal-fired one, The company plans to set up specially designed adaptors in the foundry furnaces for using LPG.
