NET WORK
Kid's stuff
The Internet simply abounds with stuff that can interest almost everybody, regardless of their age and aptitude. Children, too, can have a jolly good time on the Net, provided they log on to the right Websites. A great place to begin is Yahooligans at http://www.yahooligans.com/. This is a part of the Yahoo catalogue devoted to Websites for children. The "Art Soup" and "Science and Oddities" sections include lists of a lot of really cool sites that suggest ways to keep the little ones occupied.
Kitchen tales
It might be a good idea to teach children some basic chemistry. Take a look at http://freeweb.pdq.net/headstrong/- subtitled "Bizarre stuff you can make in your kitchen". You will find instructions for making such diverse things as slime and pickles that glow. Some of the projects are a little too dangerous for youngsters to try on their own, but these come with clear warnings.
From phones to lava lamps
Other project pages include those hosted by the company Edison International at http://www.edisonx. com/kids/experiments.html. which has instructions for making your very own phonograph, and the Exploratorium pages at http://www.exploratorium.edu/science/index.html, where you can find out how to make your own lava lamp or a pinhole camera.
Them bones
Those with a nose for dinosaur bones and palaeontology should zoom off straight to http:// www.rain.org/~philfear/down-load-a-dinosaur.html, where there are plans for making paper dinosaurs. No, you need not be a black-belt in origami: simply print out the templates and fold where marked to create anything from Stegosaurus to a flock of Orinthomimus.
