Campaign against cruelty
the World's largest animal rights organisation, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (peta), has warned that it would launch "a potentially devastating campaign against Indian tourism' if satisfactory efforts were not made by the Indian officials to end cruelty towards cows. peta has raised concerns about illegal transportation of cows across state borders by skin traders for the purpose of slaughtering them.
According to peta officials, since it was illegal to kill cows in India, corrupt skin traders bribed authorities to smuggle the animals across state borders. peta president, Ingrid Newkirk, expressed disappointment at the Indian government's apathy to the issue. "We have send several letters to the government but there has been no response,' Newkirk said. Following protests by peta, Gap Incorporation, the second largest clothing retailer in the us, has stopped using leather from animals killed in India.
