Jackal heads seized
three jackals' heads were seized at the Anna International Airport in Chennai by the police. They were about to be smuggled to Malaysia in a small bag, the top of which was covered with ornamental beads. The heads were handed over to the wildlife officials. According to the police, the accused, Bala Kanil, has been a regular visitor to Singapore, Malaysia and Sri Lanka for the last three years. Wildlife officials suspect the animals were trapped and killed a month ago. Kanil has been involved in the business for the last five years, the officials said.
According to the wildlife officials, smuggling of animals and birds is taking alarming proportions. They also said that connivance of government officials with the smugglers cannot be ruled out. Steps should be taken to have the baggage of the air-passengers checked on a regular basis to curb smuggling, they said.
