Hazardous decision

Hazardous decision while many industrialised countries are phasing out nuclear power, the Union government has approved projects to increase nuclear power generation from the present capacity of 2,800 megawatts (mw) to 20,0000 mw by 2020. In the past 20 years, European countries and the us have not set up any new nuclear plants. Nuclear power comprises only three per cent of power generated in the country. Environmentalists oppose nuclear power because it is a source of toxic waste that is impossible to safely dispose off. Nuclear power was favoured by the Indian delegation during the recently held climate negotiations at The Hague. The power generating capacity of the nuclear plant in Koodankulam, Tamil Nadu, will be increased by 2,000 mw . A detailed project report for this will be submitted to the government shortly, said S B Bhoje, director of the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu.
