Godwan faces extinction
The Great Indian Bustard, known as godwan in Rajasthan, is facing the threat of extinction due to poaching. According to estimates, there are nearly 1,000 Great Indian Bustards in the world and 75 per cent of them are found in Rajasthan. To protect the bird, a "Save Godwan Campaign' has been launched in the desert district of Jaisalmer in Rajasthan by the Bombay Natural History Society. The campaign will be confined to Jaisalmer till February 15 before it is extended to other areas. According to the organisers of the campaign, the mobility of the poachers has increased and even the remote areas of the state are not out of their reach anymore.
