CONCERN
The Supeme Court (SC) has expressed concern over the reports of considerable encroachments in forest area in Karnataka. It has directed the state government to give districtwise particulars in this regard and furnish the Steps taken by it for recovery of the encroached forest lands. The bench, comprising justice A S Anand, justice B N Kirpal and justice V N Khare, has further asked the government to inform the total extent of encroachments as they existed in 1978 and the position of encroachments in 1988-97. The SC directed encroachers not to change the nature of the concerned forests lands while the matter is pending.
