Blooming deserts
A simple and low-cost system has been devised in UK for restoring deserts. Called 'LandCover', the system is a growing medium based on a matrix that is an ultra water absorber and re-establishes agricultural growth on barren, sterile land. The matrix consists of seeds, fertilisers, pesticides and other agrochemicals in precise amounts that are not wasteful or polluting. It also has the capacity for selecting and planting the very best and most robust seeds, leading to the establishment of healthy plants on arid or semi-arid soil. This matrix was introduced as a joint venture between Prism Innovations Group and Wye college of London university (Spectrum, No 253).
