CLEAN WATER
The European Court of Justice said Italy has failed to uphold European clean water legislation in the San Rocco valley. The court found Italy's failure to prevent waste from entering streams and rivers had jeopardised the environment and health of valley residents. Italy was charged by the European Commission with having failed to take appropriate measures to set up a public or private enterprise to properly dispose of their waste. The commission initiated proceedings against Italy in 1990. After a series of formal notices and communications between them, the commission launched an infringement procedure at the court in 1997.
