Biotech park
The much-talked about women's biotechnology park, to be set up near Chennai, may be shifted to another state. The Tamil Nadu government has not taken any steps towards commissioning the park. On the other hand, the Madhya Pradesh government and the Andhara Pradesh government have shown willingness to establish the park. The Rs 10-crore project was aimed at generating self-employment schemes for women.
The project was planned with financial assistance from the department of biotechnology (dbt) and the Union and state governments. "We are still persuading the Tamil Nadu government and I am expecting an early response,' the dbt secretary Manju Sharma said. The park, once developed, aims to encourage technological and economic empowerment of women. Its design is based on the principle of decentralised production to encourage biotechnology-based enterprises. The plan for the park came up when a task force was constituted for biotechnology-based programme for women by the dbt.
