Utilising fly ash

Utilising fly ash in yet another move to control pollution caused by fly ash in the vicinity of power plants, the Union ministry of environment and forests ( mef ) has prepared a draft notification on the disposal of fly ash to control pollution.

The ministry has proposed that all brick manufacturers within 50 kilometres of a coal-based power plant would have to use 25-30 per cent of fly ash for making bricks. Also, the plants will have to supply fly ash to these brick manufacturers free of cost, said officials in the ministry.

The notification says that power plants all over the country that have been set up after the notification date will have to use the entire fly ash within a period of nine years.

On the other hand, the existing coal or lignite-based thermal power plants will have to utilise the fly ash within a period of 15 years after final publication of the notification.

A ministry official said it has been made mandatory for the Central Public Works Department and other construction agencies including those in the private sector within a 50-km radius from coal or lignite-based thermal power plants, to use ash and ash-based products in construction works.
