Powai Lake dying
the water quality of Powai lake, Mumbai, has deteriorated considerably in the past few years because of pollution and degradation. The surrounding hills have been subjected to deforestation and quarrying. According to the residents of Powai, the Brihan Municipal Corporation (bmc) has shown little interest in the deteriorating state of the lake.
A grant given by the Union ministry of environment and forest, amounting to Rs 23 crore, has still not been used for the revival of the lake. According to a bmc official, the cost of cleaning and beautifying the lake was too much.
The Bombay Natural History Society said that 3,000 cubic metres of silt had accumulated in the lake, decreasing it's depth by a metre.
