Quake cometh
High intensity earthquakes may rock some parts of northeastern India between 2030 and 2040, say scientists at the University of Roorkee, Uttar Pradesh. They have analysed seismicity data of the region for the last 200 years. The researchers say that the Arakan Yoma and Naga thrust belt in Northeast India will experience quakes of high magnitude after the year 2030. The area between 20 degrees north and 27.5 degrees north latitudes and 93 degree east and 98 degree east longitudes, will not be seriously affected by high magnitude quakes till the year 2025 (energy accumulation stage). But after that quake activity will start showing till 2030 (increasing release of energy stage). The thrust called the 'intense release of energy stage', will start from the year 2030 and continue for ten years when the area, which is part of the Indo-Burmese seismic region, will witness high magnitude earthquakes, they say.
