Monitoring progress
The Supreme Court (SC) has asked the Delhi government to supply a status report detailing the steps it has taken to shift polluting industries away from residential areas. The bench, headed by Justice Y K Sabharwal, has asked the state government to file an affidavit on the progress made in setting up common effluent treatment plants for treating industrial discharge. Some industrial societies have, meanwhile, objected to the government order that raises their contribution for setting up these plants by two to three times.
Earlier, the SC had ordered that industrial units would not be allowed to operate in non-conforming areas after December 31, 2002. Efforts, though feeble, are underway to relocate these units to the Bawana industrial area.
