Vicious grip
the menace of aids has assumed alarming proportions in Madhya Pradesh (mp) despite efforts adopted on a war footing by the government. According to a recent workshop on "aids and media" organised by the Press Information Bureau, there are 121 hiv-positive case in mp, despite the World Bank-aided National aids Control Programme being conducted in the state in full swing.
When the aids control programme was launched in 1992, only two cases had been reported, but within four years, the number of cases skyrocketed.Despite the efforts of the health department's state aids cell to educate and caution the people about the fallout of aids, Indore tops the list with 86 cases, while Bhopal has reported 10 cases. Ill-equipped blood banks add to the misery. The districts reported to be seriously affected by aids are Khargone, Raipur, Jabalpur, Dewas, Dhar, Sagar, Shajapur, Khandwa.
