Five United Nations' (UN) agencies have agreed to extend a US $20 million aid package to initiate a programme for untversalisation of elementary education in India. An agreement to this effect was signed recently by the department of economic affairs, education and five UN agencies - UNDP, UNICEF, UNESCO, ILO and UNFPA. The UN Human Development Report has emphasised the need to focus on long-term development goals. And this agreement reflects UN's emphasis on basic education as a crucial input for the programmes on sustainable human development and poverty alleviation. The scheme will be implemented in 100 blocks, small towns and urban slums in eight states. To begin with, the programme will be implemented in 139 slums in Hyderabad and 332 slums in Jaipur.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has offered an assistance of US S4 million to complement the government's ongoing efforts to supply renewable energy to tribal villages in India. The aid has been provided under the UNDP-government of India country co-operation framework to cover the 1997-2000 period. It will cover select tribal villages in Bihar, Maharashtra and Orissa besides those in the Northeast and the desert regions of Rajasthan.
