DEVASTATING CYCLONE
At least 61 people were killed and thousands of establishments destroyed when a cyclonic storm hit southern coastal area in Bangladesh recently. According to relief officials, nearly 10 lakh residents have been evacuated from the cyclone hit area. Remote islands of Bhola, Laxmipur, Noakholi and Khulna were some of the worst affected areas when the cyclone devastated these parts with a speed of 150 kmph. Apart from army and navy troops, nearly 32,000 volunteers are said to have joined the rescue operations. Official sources said that about 50,000 people were affected due to the storm that originated from the Bay of Bengal.
