ILLEGAL QUARRYING STOPPED: The Bombay High Court has asked the state government to halt illegal quarrying in Thane and Navi Mumbai. A public interest petition moved in the court claimed unrestricted quarrying at nine locations is causing irreversible environmental damage to the scenic hills of Thane and Navi Mumbai. It also stated that according the Thane collectorate no quarrying lease has been granted for these sites. The court asked government agencies including the state environment and forest department to submit report on the extent of the environmental damage and the status of quarrying activities. The petitioner, Pradip Indulkar, a local businessmanactivist, said the civic agencies plan to allow quarry activities.
