The Netherlands: A long-term project in 1999 started at the Dutch Cyclist Union funded by the Ministry of Transport to adopt better cycling policy in over 60 municipalities. The first city to have won the award is Veenendaat in November 2000.



United Kingdom: A new initiative launched by the national cycling organisation. This will be based on a system to support local authorities to implement the cycling policy and measure success of the initiative.



European Commission: A project called Bicycle Policy Audit initiated by the Commission. This audit will be first done in seven European cities.



Switzerland: A citizens' initiative launched in 1996 with 108,857 signatures to the Federal authorities of Bern to reduce by half the volume of private motorised transport within a period of 10 years. In March 1999, it got the support of the parliamentarians and later on huge popular support.
