BRAZIL

An oil spill of about 100 litres of crude oil has been reported from one of the refineries of Petrobras, Brazil's oil giant. The spill is spread over an area of 2 square kilometres, off the coast of northeastern Ceara state. Petrobras officials are trying to remove the oil stain with chemicals.

Petrobras has been ordered to pay a record fine of nearly us $100 million for a recent spill of the four million liters of crude oil in the Iguacu River, which was the Brazil's worst ecological disaster in the past 25 years. The oil firm has caused four spills since January, 2000. The spills have tarnished Petrobras' image and government officials are questioning the effectiveness of the company policies regarding its vast network.
