Rotten fish stinks, and so smell had always been held as the conclusive proof of its freshness. But now, one Icelandic company has done away with all that smelling business. A gadget they have developed, says the Financial Times (July 30) London, tests the freshness of a fish by measuring the resistance of its skin. The RT Fish Checker contains a battery and two electrodes which are placed on the fish's skin. Green, orange and red lights indicate whether the fish is fresh, aging or plain rotten.
