WORD COMMITION ON DAMS

The World Commission on Dams began its first South Asian hearing on large dams and their alternatives in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The hearing was originally scheduled to be held in India. It could not take place because the Indian government refused permission. Chairperson of the commission Kader Asmal said the hearings were planned to provide the commission with facts which would help it to prepare a report. The report will be advisory in nature and will seek to influence international opinion on the future of large dams, said Asmal.
