SOUTH AFRICA
Science must contribute substantially to the development of the society as a whole in the country: this is the new policy being promoted by the government's Foundation for Research Development (FRD), that has recently come up with the Reconstruction and Development Programme, a scheme which enjoys cross- party support, and which is intended to improve basic living conditions and pro, mote economic growth.
The FRD intends to launch a new research programme by the end of this year and has invited scientists to submit their proposals. But there are some conditions. The proposals would have to be within 4 new strategic themes: competetive industry, improved quality of life, sustainable environment and effective science, engineering and technology education and awareness. Also, they must e internationally competative, involve collaboration th industry and include :neasures that favour blacks and women.
