Solid waste management: standing committee on urban development (2008-2009)

An effective management of solid waste, according to the Ministry of Urban Development, involved a multi-material, multi-source, environmentally sustainable management approach, with following activities associated with it: waste generation; waste handling and sorting, storage and processing at source; collection; sorting, processing and transformation; transfer and transport; and disposal. It was further informed that the waste management options included the hierarchy of: waste minimization; recycling; waste processing; waste transformation; disposal on land. The Committee examined these and various other issues concerning the magnitude of the problem of municipal solid waste and its management in urban India, along with role of different stake holders in mitigating the problem.
