GUIANA
Many leatherback turtles recently died while nesting in Guiana. While patrolling, a World Wide Fund for Nature (wwf) team found 12 entangled leatherbacks in a single net. According to wwf , the high mortality rates can be attributed to fishing activities near nesting beaches. "Turtle deaths in Guiana have taken a serious turn in recent years. Fisheries regulations should be strengthened to prevent this,' said Arnoud Schouten, wwf -Guianas' marine turtle coordinator.
