Green planes
The successful Roll-Royce Tay engine used in 70- and 100-seat Fokker airliners, the Gulfstream GIV executive jet, and the redesigned Boeing 727-100 air-crafts, are to be equipped with an advanced low-emissions combustion system. According to LPS British Industrial News (No 24/95), the new combustor has improved carbon monoxide readings by 37 per cent, unbunrt hydrocarbons by 63 per cent and nitrous oxide by almost 10 per cent. The combustor head is cast with an inner lining of hundreds of cooling pedestals. The cooling bead is graded along a sheet barrel, which requires about 30 per cent less cooling air. This, with optimised mixing, helps reduce emissions.
