to the deserving: Binayak Sen has been chosen for the highest international honour in global health and human rights, the Jonathan Mann Award for 2008. A doctor and a human rights activist, he established a hospital for mine workers in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. He was arrested in May 2007 on allegations of helping Naxalites and has been in the jail ever since. The Global Health Council has chosen Sen for his services among the tribal and poor communities in India.
