Clean cars, clean cities The Union government will supply lead-free petrol to the 4 metropolitan cities from April 1, 1995. At a meeting chaired by environment minister Kamal Nath, to discuss steps to curb automobile pollution in big cities, it was decided to simultaneously ban the sale of 4-wheel vehicles without catalytic converters. Besides, by April 1, 1996, all 2- and 3-wheelers with 2-stroke engines will have to meet the emission standard of 3.0 per cent carbon monoxide of total emission by volume.

The meeting, attended by officials of the Union ministries of surface transport, petroleum and natural gas, the Delhi government, the Central Pollution Control Board, and the oil and automobile industries, also discussed administrative measures such as staggering working hours in shops and offices (in order to miss the peak traffic hour), restriction on plying of cars and incentives for car-pooling.
