dam compensation: The Implementation Committee of the Mangla Dam Raising Project of Pakistan met recently to review the progress of the project and the distribution of compensation to the affectees. It said the dam raising project in Mirpur district in Pakistan-administered Kashmir will not happen unless the affected were resettled. It announced the distribution of the remaining compensation of US $230 million. A working group would be set up to monitor the dam raising project and the distribution of compensation. The group will submit a report to higher authorities on a weekly basis. The committee agreed to the affectees demand for extension of separate compensation to the additional families for resettlement in Mirpur district.

gas company sues: Lanka Auto Gas Filling Stations (LAGFS), the country's second largest LPG company, has filed a fundamental rights petition before the Supreme Court.The company said its fundamental rights had been violated because the country's Consumer Affairs Authority did not allow it to raise the price of a 12.5 kg gas cylinder by LKR 157.94 (US $1.42). On May 14, the authority had raised gas prices by LKR 20 (US $0.18) from LKR 939 (US $8.46) for LAGFS, and by LKR 38 (US $0.342) from LKR 960 (US $8.65) for Shell.
