POST CLINTON MEASURE

In keeping with the Forest Conservation Treaty signed during US President Bill Clinton's recent visit to the country, the Bangladesh government will soon impose a ban on the felling of trees till 2005 to save biodiversity and conserve the forest resources of the country. Evironmentalists have voiced concerns that the Chittagong Hills are facing ecological ruin due to population explosion among the indigenous tribes of the area and their traditional farming methods. They say the Chittagong Hill Tracts, covering the rugged but green districts of Rangamati, Khagrachari and Bandarban are facing the danger posed by land erosion, forest fires, loss of wildlife and flood.
