Hi tech control

Hi tech control A sophisticated environmental pollution information and control system (EPICS) is being developed jointly by the Union ministry of environment and forests and the Delhi-based National Institute for Science, Technology and Development Studies (NISTADS).

According to A K Mathur of NISTADS, the key feature of EPICS would be the production of "pollution thematic maps (maps of areas affected by air, water and ground pollution) using the latest in geographical information techniques". The project would use data gathered by the central and the state pollution control boards as well as the National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA).

NISTADS is being equipped with the most advanced equipment for the project, including devices for visual and digital interpretation of satellite imagery, cartography, and advanced software to handle detailed information about the status of air, water and ground pollution from all parts of the country. According to Mathur, EPICS would play a key role in "preventing pollution at sources" by pinpointing heavily polluted areas and identifying the best technical solutions possible.
